This article discusses one of the interpretations of a female commentator, namely Bint Syathi‘. In his work Al Tafsir Al Bayani li Al-Quran Al Karim, Bint Syathi ‘uses a literary approach and interprets the verse based on the chronology of its derivation by not following the arrangement of the surah in the Al-Quran manuscripts. The general principle of Bint Syathi’ in interpreting the Al-Quran, adheres to three things, namely first, the Al-Quran describes itself by itself (Al-Quran yufassir ba’dluhu ba’dla), second, the Al-Quran must be studied and understood as a whole. as a unity with the characteristics of unique expressions and language style, third, acceptance of the chronological order of the Koran can provide historical information regarding the contents of the Koran without losing its timelessness. In order to maintain the originality and taste of the language of the Koran, Bint Syathi proposed several ways to get rid of external and foreign elements in the understanding of the Koran. First, Bint Syathi rejects the intervention of israilliyat in helping to explain the meaning of the Koran. This is because according to him the Koran speaks in universal language by presenting moral examples, does not elaborate on the detailed expression of every mystical and historical event. Second, avoid discussing the connection between the Koran and modern science. The verses in the Koran are seen as having their own intrinsic meaning and can only be understood by studying in their own context, not as lessons in various different modern sciences or textual evidence in line with current theories in the field of modern knowledge.
